Meet the Candidate

Born and raised in Fresno, California, I grew up in a blue collar home.  I moved to Atascadero on the Central Coast in 1988 with my wife and family, and then to American Canyon in 1994.  The kids are grown and have families of their own.  Cheryl and I still love living in American Canyon and want to make sure it remains "family friendly."

Experience and Education

As City Mgr.jpg

Public Service is not just my calling; it's what I was trained to do!  I have a college degree in Public Administration and over 30 years of experience in local government management, working in big cities and small, including 13 years here in American Canyon.

Starting my career in Fresno, I worked in management positions in Police, Public Works, Human Resources, and Parks.  I was the Finance Director for three cities:  Atascadero, American Canyon and Suisun City.

I was also American Canyon's City Manager from 1997 to 2006, and helped build the community we all enjoy today. This includes acquiring the open space (Wetlands and Newell) we all love and cherish; much of the retail and industrial development, and many of the public facilities, such as parks, schools and the Community Gym.

Community Service

I once joked I retired early because I was too busy volunteering my time!

Community service goes hand in hand with public service.  In addition to serving 12 years as your Council member, I am proud to say I volunteer for many community organizations, including:

  • The American Canyon Arts Foundation, where I served as President and Secretary/Treasurer;

  • Charter member of the Kiwanis Club of American Canyon, and current Treasurer

  • Life member of the Friends of the American Canyon Library

  • Life member of the American Canyon Community Parks Foundation

  • Member, Arts Council Napa Valley, and served on their Board

  • Member, Napa Valley Vine Trail, and served on their Board

  • Member, Land Trust of Napa Valley

Community Awards

  • Gateway Award Winner (2007)

  • Organizational Award Winner, Arts (2008)

  • Labor Partnership Award (2016)

  • Climate Champion (2022)

  • Relay For Life, in which Beth Marcus and I walked all 24 hours (with breaks!)

  • Graduate, Leadership Napa Valley (Class 14, 2001)

  • Former Member, Blue Ribbon Water Committee

City Councilmember

I was elected to the City Council in 2010, and re-elected in 2014 and 2018.  I try to focus my time on the same issues that led me to run in 2010:  Traffic Relief, Business Growth and Accountability in Government.  Since then, I have added a fourth:  Climate Change.

  • Vice-Chair, Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA)

  • Member, City Council's Economic Development Subcommittee

  • Secretary for the Chamber of Commerce's Governmental Affairs Committee

  • Member, Napa County Climate Action Committee

  • Member, American Canyon's Ad hoc Climate Change Committee

  • Former Vice-Chair of the local Tourism Improvement District

  • Served on the Napa County Joint Task Force on Affordable Housing

  • Member, Council ad hoc committee to revise the Council's Governance Protocols
